KIMBERLY
Being a ghost is beyond lonely. I still canât sleep. Although my spirit apparently doesnât need to, I long to close my eyes and fall into a deep slumber.
The halls and grounds are always empty at night except for Hank, the feral cats, and stray dogs that like to hang around.
I hope Ash talks to Josh. I want to leave this place, even though I am terrified of where I will go. What if I donât go to a better place and just fade away? Perhaps thatâd be better than this hollow existence. However, I was somewhere before I got pulled back into this world, but where? And how do I get back there?
I touch the books in the library. I never cared much for books until Josh. It might be interesting to see what has happened to the world in the last thirty years. It sure didnât end like my pastor always preached it would.
Is Pastor John still around? I pinch my lips together. Now that Iâm dead, it might be nice to talk with him and ask him how I transcend.
The room shakes, the lights flicker, and chills travel up my spine like spiders on a deadly mission. The windows break open and glass tears through the once-quiet library. A strange odor fills the air like rotten flesh.
I press myself against the wall. Everything screams inside me to flee, but I canât move.
Green gas creeps inside the room, cats nearby hiss and howl, and dogs bark wildly. What is going on?
A deep piercing laughter consumes the room. Books crash onto the floor in piles. The light fixtures explode causing sparks and glass to fly in the air.
âKimberly, Iâm coming for you. My powers are getting stronger, soon Iâll break the bonds that tie me to the old graveyard.â
I gasp. I know that voice, even after thirty years. Chris Young. His evil image emerges from the green gas creating a frightening looming spirit.
I try to scream but nothing comes out. This cannot be happening. I canât be his forever.
His laughter consumes the library.
âYou donât look excited to see me,â he spats out. âAre you still in love with Josh? How pathetic are you? Donât you realize you ruined our lives together? You and thatââ
âPlease leave him out of this,â I beg.
He rubs his jaw causing his image to blur. âBut darling, I canât. Heâs going to die, I promise you. Not a quick death, but a long and horrifying one.â He shakes a green finger at me. âThis is all your fault.â
I swallow hard. His hatred is devouring me. Iâm drifting closer to him.
âWe should have been King and Queen,â he roars. âYou made a fool out of me. I loved you.â
âWe would have died that night if we went to prom, donât you see?â I plea with him.
His eyes scrunch together, causing them to blur into his nose. His mouth is a frightening scowl. âWho do you think started the fire? If we couldnât have our special night, then no one would.
